Abstract

This article explores the role and fate of the Dako family following the Congress of Manastir and their persecution during the communist regime in Albania. The 1908 Congress was a decisive moment in Albanian history, consolidating the national alphabet and strengthening collective identity. The Dako family, represented by figures such as Sotir Peci and Lef Nosi, played a significant role in this historical process. However, after the establishment of the communist regime, many Congress participants, including members of the Dako family, faced political persecution due to their democratic orientation and ties to the West. The article examines the key factors that led to their repression, focusing on the family’s influence in Albanian education and culture. It highlights how the regime aimed to erase their legacy as part of broader efforts to suppress national elites. The study draws on previously unpublished archival materials and family testimonies, offering a contribution to preserving historical memory in the face of ideological distortion and historical erasure.
