Abstract

Aleksandër Xhuvani, a distinguished son and honorary citizen of Elbasan, is one of the most prominent figures in Albanian linguistics and education. A professor, researcher, and leading academic, he made foundational contributions to the standardization, purification, and development of the Albanian language. Actively engaged in the political and social life of the country, Xhuvani left a lasting legacy in Albanology and in the history of national education. His published works, as well as posthumously released manuscripts, reflect the depth and scholarly value of his contributions. In collaboration with scholars like Eqrem Çabej and Mahir Domi, within the Institute of Sciences, he helped establish core departments dedicated to the collection and study of the Albanian lexicon and the development of foundational school textbooks. This paper aims to offer a comprehensive assessment of Aleksandër Xhuvani’s contribution to the field of lexicography, with particular emphasis on the collection and analysis of the lexical wealth of the Elbasan region—his birthplace and the cultural setting that shaped his linguistic and professional formation.
