The SS Skanderbeg division and circumstances surrounding its formation in 1944

Abstract

The formation of the SS 'Skanderbeg' Division does not necessarily represent an outcome of a political or military occupation of Albania by the Germans during the Second World War. The Third Reich recruited soldiers for the Waffen SS in numerous other countries forming thus foreign SS units. According to German propaganda, through the formation of this division the Albanian government would ultimately have armed forces under its command, which would serve to fight off communists and as a result prevent their advancement after the Germans would leave.
