Abstract

This article looks at the evolution of linguistic thought about the category of adverbials in Albanian grammars. Through a historical critical view, the study aims at tracking the achievements, the type of criteria used in these grammars in identifying adverbials and their subcategorization, and the issues as well. The problem of distinguishing this syntactic category from other syntactic categories in the sentence is crucial to this study. The grammars taken under investigation constitute well-known reference points in Albanian grammatology. The results of this work show that adverbials in Albanian grammars form a heterogeneous category, which is reflected not only in the dissimilar terminology used, but firstly, by different types of criteria applied in these grammars for defining, distinguishing and classifying adverbials. Furthermore, this article emphasizes the need of using new syntactic criteria in identifying adverbials. Finally, the study calls attention to revise and update our knowledge about adverbials, which must be accompanied by the investigation of this category not only in written language, but most importantly, in spoken Albanian, as a crucial requirement of contemporary linguistics.
