Kostaq Cipo and fjalori i gjuhës shqipe 1954

Abstract

Kostaq Cipo was the head of the compiling work of “Dictionary of Albanian language”, 1954 and he was also complier of it, together with Eqrem Çabej, Mahir Domi, Anton Krajni and Osman Myderizi. A lot of difficulties exist in the process of estimating of Cipo’s contribution in this work, because we have not found either traces of the project of this work, or criterias on which the work is based. We haven’t also found any type script or editorial material. But today, after 60 years of the compilation and 58 years of its edition, it is the Dictionary… which testifies Cipo’s contribution in the first collective and institutional lexicographic work. According to K. Cipo: “What dictionary has in, it was sieved in a good sieve but it’s possible here and there to exist any oversight, that can be seen from outside better than that, seen by us the insiders. But the style and language are easy ones and whole the Dictionary can be read like novel”. We can affirm that the work on the techniques and ways of lexicographic appearance of the material is connected with the name of Kostaq Cipo. The scientific logic obey us that he has said his word in this field, because the compilation of the dictionary means in the same time all processes that are connected with its edition. Estimating this work in relation with the time when it was realised, we can say that it is a very mature work. It is the crowning of dreams, efforts and the work of the some generations, which started many years ago; it is the work of men who wanted to do Albania, firstly through the language. Let’s bring in mind some such works like Kristoforidhi’s Dictionary, Gazulli’s Dictionary, Tase’s Dictionary, Kolea’s Dictionary, Kruja’s Dictionary). The above dictionary filled in one way the existing lexicographic hole and in the same time it played an irreplaceable role in all planes for the developing and elaborating of Past-war Albanian Language.
