Abstract

This paper examines Gjergj Fishta’s position on the Albanian language, with a focus on the standard variety, based on his journalistic writings published in the magazine "Hylli i Dritës" between 1914 and 1930. As a speaker, researcher, and connoisseur of Albanian and several foreign languages, Fishta’s perspectives offer valuable insight into early Albanian language policy. The analysis of his writings reveals not only his views on the formation, use, and development of the standard language, but also the historical and cultural factors that shaped those views. His consistent support for preserving the Albanian language, recognizing the literary potential of the Tosk dialect, and promoting linguistic unity is evident throughout his work. Viewed from a contemporary perspective, Fishta’s ideas remain relevant, reflecting his foresight and the importance he attributed to language as a core element of national identity and cultural development.
